Ah, I did try copy-pasting — I should have mentioned that. I can't seem to paste into X11 at all — in xterm it completely ignores the cmd-v, while in GIMP I just get the "v". The character viewer and keyboard viewer I get from clicking the flag in the top OS X menubar don't seem to be able to paste into X11 either (clicking "Insert" does nothing).
