I think it's high time to get to know each other a little bit, that is, how you use GIMP and/or Inkscape, how much you know about these tools etc. This makes it also easier for everyone involved to know what you would like to see here. For instance, making a tutorial is always a bit of a shot in the dark if you don't know anything about the people who watch this community. So, don't be shy and talk to us :)

These days, besides basic photo editing, I mostly use GIMP to make scanned traditional art better for web viewing, but even though I've used GIMP for a while and know what most of the tools do, I still can't figure out how to accomplish some basic things. Like color correcting my scanned pictures so that the scan really looks good and like the colors I painted. I fiddle with the sliders and curves of the color tools but with little success. Also I still don't manage to make pieces I needed to scan in parts merge seamlessly, even though I try overlapping and such. Sometimes the lines don't match and especially with color pictures the colors in the same scanned part in the overlapping area are not the same in the two halves, even though it is the same area of the painting scanned with the same scanner. I don't understand why that is or how to fix those things.

Before my rats chewed through my tablet cable I've tried using Gimp for inking and coloring, but I had trouble to apply most digital fanart tutorials, because the brushes in Gimp are apparently quite different from what Photoshop has.

I also tried to use Inkscape once, thinking it might give me nice sleek lineart (for things like my icons, which I draw), but it was an older version and I didn't really manage to make it work, and the newer versions somehow don't compite on my older Linux version on my laptop so I have given up on that.

I use GIMP because I don't have Photoshop. I have so many ideas but not enough ability!! I'd love to be able to make it look like someone is holding something for instance, I can cut out an image and place it on another one but that is all!

Inkscape other: for graphs and images used for scientific publications. So for example editing R output graphs.

I have GIMP installed and that's about as far as I've gotten. I joined this comm to find some tips on how to use it. I guess if I ever figure the basics out, I'll want some tutorials and quesions/comments for making graphics and manips and icons and the likes.

Inkscape - what's that?

Something I often use Inkscape for is an intermediate step in making something else, since it's a lossless and object-y application. Examples: if I'm making an image that's a patchwork of many individual images, I'll import them into inkscape to scale, align, and arrange. I've used it to put a bunch of images together on a page for efficient printing. I've also used it to trace and then losslessly scale logos and things. I do a bit of original stuff in it too, like my business cards.

I don't even know what Inkscape is. Just throwing that out there.

I'm also very against challenges. And I realize as a lurker my say doesn't amount to much, but there it is. There are more comms then I can count that are based on challenges and I like that this is just a place to learn. It makes it less intimidating and far more likely that I'll ask a question. One day.

I use GIMP and Photoscape for icon and fanart stuff. So far I've been successful enough but I still have some issues with text icons.

I can't say how often I would participate in challenges but I do like the idea of people posting things they've done with GIMP/Inkscape and letting others ask questions. IDK, maybe every two weeks.

I didn't even know about Inkscape until I read this. I use GIMP for icons, manips, fanart, and photo editing though I'm not satisfied wish its text graphics capabilities.

I'm of two minds about challenges. One is that, no I don't think challenges really fit with a tips/tutorials/resources community like this is. On the other hand, challenges can be fun. Though they can also be depressing if one runs them - I run icon_style and I'm thinking of giving up because of low participation.

I use GIMP and Inkscape to create graphics for my and my mate's website, and book covers.

Part of the reason there aren't any graphics there right now is because I'm bad at it.

Inkscape other:

I recently installed Inkscape to edit the plot output from a pcb design program, KiCad (also FOSS). Since then I have used it to design the front panel label for a prototype item of electronic equipment - but due to inadequate knowledge, had to print it out several times, adjusting the size slightly each time, to make it fit.

With Gimp I do rather better, mostly editing photos for brightness and contrast, sharpness, colour balance etc. I used to use Corel photopaint, but technology and prices moved on, and so did I.
