[admin post] Admin Post: Welcome to a new year!

With the new year, I've taken the opportunity to update the community guidelines; from now on, anyone can create and add tags when posting here. This makes it hopefully a bit easier for everyone to tag their posts with appropriate tags, but please take a look at the existing tags before creating a new one. Also, administrators and moderators - just me at the moment - reserve the right to rename, merge and remove tags whenever deemed necessary.

Welcome also to all the new members and subscribers who joined this community in the last couple of weeks. Users of all levels and experience are welcome here, so ask/post away if you have any questions and please take a moment to read the community guidelines. You might also want to fill out the poll I posted a while ago which is intended to be a community resource, a reflection of the community's 'mind & skill state' so to speak. Useful resources, tips and tricks can be found via the community's tag list and link collection.

Feel free to say 'Hi' in the comments if you're new here and also feel free to share any resources etc. you think could be useful for others :)

[admin post] Admin Post: Follow-up on the last poll

Thanks everyone who participated in the poll I'd posted a few weeks ago. I'll leave the poll open so that new members and subscribers can participate as well if they want to, and those of you who have participated can always go back and change your vote. I'd like the poll to exist as a community resource, as a reflection of the community's 'mind & skill state' so to speak...

I'd also like to encourage everyone to post your questions here, no matter how trivial or banal they might appear. This isn't supposed to be a community where only fancy tutorials or other advanced topics are 'worthy' of posting. You're a beginner and don't know where to start? Ask! You've seen this beautiful header but have no idea how to achieve a similar effect? Ask! Really, there are no 'stupid' questions, and snarky, rude or sarcastic comments will not be tolerated here. Just saying :)

[admin post] Admin Post: It's poll time

I think it's high time to get to know each other a little bit, that is, how you use GIMP and/or Inkscape, how much you know about these tools etc. This makes it also easier for everyone involved to know what you would like to see here. For instance, making a tutorial is always a bit of a shot in the dark if you don't know anything about the people who watch this community. So, don't be shy and talk to us :)

[admin post] Admin Post: Updated community rules

Inkscape, an open source vector graphics editor application, similar to Adobe Illustrator, has been added to the community's domain of interest since users (including myself) have expressed interest in the application (read updated community rules). Of course, we could simply create a community for Inkscape users, but GIMP and Inkscape are very similar in function and performance, and sometimes used complementary. I also agree with [personal profile] foxfirefey -- it's better to contribute to an active community than create a brand new community that wouldn't have as many people.

One thing remains the same, though: users of all levels and experience are welcome here. I'll also create tags for GIMP and Inkscape so that's easier for you to subscribe to specific topics (in case you're not interested in Inkscape related posts).

But what about the community name? Should we stick with [community profile] gimp_gate, or should we change it to [profile] gimpscape (as soon as rename tokens are available)? The latter is, as you probably can see, a combination of GIMP and Inkscape whereas the community's current name only highlights GIMP. What do you think?

Should we change the community name?

No, gimp_gate works just fine.

Yes, gimpscape is a much better name.

[admin post] Admin Post: A question for all you GIMP users

I'm sure most of you have already heard about the DW anniversary party that's organized by [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw and that starts Monday, April 26. My question is what awesome things we could or should do here at [community profile] gimp_gate to join the festivities. Any ideas or suggestions? What would you like to see here during the fest?

I'm aware that lots of communities would love if you'd create content for the fest and I can see how the whole thing might get overwhelming fast... So, no pressure here. Also, you're more than welcome to post here even if you don't want your content to be "DW only".

Signal boost & bruhes!

In case you haven't heard yet, [personal profile] erda is running Three Weeks for Dreamwidh in celebration of Dreamwitdh's one-year anniversary (the start date for the fest is planned to be Monday, April 26). The idea is that participants post content specifically produced for the fest only on DW - for three weeks from the posting date. After that time you can post it wherever you want (and, yes, you can continue posting your regular content as you like). If you have any questions or suggestions regarding the fest, please comment on [personal profile] erda's entry.

So, let's celebrate this together! I'll participate, too :) And speaking of creating content, here is a great collection of (gimp) brushes to look for inspiration...

World Day Against Cyber Censorship

This entry isn't about The GIMP, but today is the World Day Against Cyber Censorship, and I believe it is an important issue that we should all be aware of. Feel free to spread the word. Stop Cyber Censorship. Protect Online Free Speech.

Update and the myth of DPI

The last couple of weeks, I've been adding more links to gimpgate on delicious. I think the collection covers most of the (English-written) GIMP tutorial/forum websites out there, but in case I've missed some, or you know of good websites in other languages, you can tell me by commenting here; comments there will be screened to avoid unnecessary spam or advertising in the future. Also, I'd like to hear if you know of good stock websites, websites with large font, brush, or texture collections, or any other kinds of resources that might come in handy when creating something with GIMP. Thanks for your help! :)

In other news, I've stumbled upon an article about the myth of DPI, in which the author explains what you need to know about the resolution in digital images bound for the web. He also explains what you need to keep in mind when using images in fluid-width layouts.

Welcome to new members, and some photo editing tricks

I've seen that people have started subscribing to this community, so welcome everyone! I hope you enjoy this community and find lots of opportunities to share your GIMP love with other users.

As I've mentioned in an earlier post, I don't have much time at the moment to devote to this project as I would like, but I'll try to make weekly posts here, and I'll also try to add more useful stuff to the delicious link collection (I'm open for suggestions!). Anyway, this is a community, so feel free to post your own questions, ideas, thoughts, challenges and more -- as long as it's somehow related to The GIMP ^^

And here are the promised photo editing tricks: 10 Sweet GIMP Photo Editing Tricks to Wean You Off Photoshop. This is a post that goes out to people who might not know about GIMP, or think it's nothing like Photoshop, but obviously this kind of post is quite useful for GIMP users, too. It covers 1) photo batch processing, 2) how you can sharpen photos, 3) how you can make your own brushes, 4) how you can make a lightsaber, 5) how you can create a swirly wallpaper or water drop effect, 6) how you can create an explosion in outer space, 7) how you can convert photos to sketches, 8) how you can mix black & white with color, 9) how you can convert photos to neon, and 10) how you can draw graffiti.

EDIT: Added a list of the things the article covers (some of you might want to know before you click on the link...)

[admin post] Admin Post: GIMP Gate on delicious

GIMP Gate can now also be found on delicious (as previously noted here). I've created an account and a few bookmarks are already 'live', but the (still private) bookmark collection is quite large and it might take a while to sort it, especially since I don't have much spare time at the moment. Anyway, if you have comments or suggestions regarding the link collection, please let me know :)

Gimp Gate Update

Sorry for being missing in action for so long, but I'm quite busy with writing my PhD dissertation at the moment. I'll resume my work with Gimp Gate as soon as my dissertation is out of the way :)

[admin post] Admin Post: The idea behind GIMP Gate

GIMP Gate is a project that's been simmering for a long time in the back of my mind; the initial idea was to create a simple website that would help people, who are fairly new to The GIMP (and image manipulation), get started. Having to wade through countless websites and (often unsorted) link collections can be quite frustrating, especially if you are a beginner and don't know yet what exactly you are looking for. But then I realized that such a website - without any social networking and collaborative tools - wouldn't be flexible enough, and in the end not very helpful either. Which brings us here...

EDIT: Inkscape, an open source vector graphics editor application, similar to Adobe Illustrator, has been added to the community based on users' choice/interest.

What GIMP Gate is about

In this community, people can share tips & tricks about GIMP/Inkscape, they can ask other people for help, they can post (about) tutorials and resources, they can write meta-posts and/or image manipulation, they can pose challenges... The list is endless and all kinds of posts are welcome here as long as they're somehow related to GIMP/Inkscape (read the complete guidelines & rules).

In addition to this community, I'll also collect links on delicious, to make it easier for people to find external websites related to GIMP/Inkscape and other useful resources. External links will be periodically checked to ensure that they work. Of course, there are thousands of websites out there, of varying quality; many of them are already listed on delicious. The goal with the link collection is to point people in the right direction, and to help them see through the trees in order to get a better view of the GIMP/Inkscape forest. The intention is not to list all websites out there...

How to help, how to join

If you know of good websites that you think should be in the link collection on delicious, please tell me by commenting on this entry here. All comments will be screened to avoid unnecessary spam or advertising.
